Our History

Nepali Class Boston is a Boston Tamu Samaaj initiative. It all started with seven children in a library in Watertown, Massachusetts in April of 2014 to create an environment for children of Nepalese descent to have an opportunity to learn about their rich cultural heritage.

In June 2014, Nepali Class Boston collaborated with MITeri, a Nepalese student body at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a group of highly motivated and dedicated Nepalese individuals from the Greater Boston area and started holding classes at MIT from March to November. Starting in 2019, the program found its home at Somerville Public Schools. Over the years, Nepali Class Boston has grown from 7 to over 150 school-age children ranging in age from 5 to 15 years.

Run strictly on a committed volunteer basis, the majority of the volunteers are parents who have the skills, interest, and commitment to support and advocate the program’s mission. Our parents and students come from diverse economic and professional backgrounds from the Greater Boston area, spanning out to New Hampshire and Rhode Island as well.
